Take
your time when choosing a general contractor. The thought of building a
new home can sometimes sweep you into a frenzy of house plans and budgets. It's
easy to get caught up in the process, so be careful to not make a mistake. |

Top 3 Things to look for
- Contractor and Sub Contractors are Insured
- NO down payment
- Exact Price in writing / Change Order Policies
- Insured
- Make sure that your Contractor and his sub contractors are fully insured.
You will be held liable for uninsured contractors.
- Down Payment
- Work with a reputable Abstract Company who will do inspections when a
bill is presented. Your abstract company will disperse money to the contractor
after the work is completed and an inspection has been done.
- Price
- Your contractor should state an EXACT price for your project. Make
sure the price contains sufficient allowances to meet your expectations.
Never let the contractor charge you more. If you do decide to make changes
along the way, make sure your contractor gives you a written Change Order.
The change order should include any extra amount added to the contract and
a new contract price. Both you and the contractor should sign the change
order. This way there will be no surprises in the end.
